My 2000 Jag S-type seems to be running hot - when I park it I frequently hear the fan running, however my temp gauge says the car is normal and no other engine indicators are lighting up. We have enough water/coolant in the reservoir. The fan eventually shuts off, but we've been noticing this is happening more and more and with the summer months approaching I'm getting worried. Any ideas?
Thanks
Clayton

I have had the same problem with my Jag S Type R. After about 8 visits to garage they have figured out that it was a water pump - at least they call it so here in Croatia. What they did was replaced it and so far - 8.000 km I have no such problems. Cost me all togther some 600 Euro. Hope this helps.

Hi, also check for trapped air in the system. The fan will come on at just over the half way mark. This will happen if you have an air lock. Air gets trapped in the system when cracks form in the plastic reservoir. This allows air to get sucked in. The reservoir bottle can look like it has fluid in it for a long time. To bleed it  when cold, open the screw at the end of the hose attached to the reservoir and fill the reservoir until fluid freely pours out of the hose. Then tighten the screw again. Run it it for awhile then add more coolant if necessary

lowanover gave you a good advice. I can only comment the following:

Check for the air in your cooling system, make sure your thermostat is working and check if coolant is running to the radiator when the engine is hot. DO NOT OPEN radiator or coolant reservoir cap if your engine is HOT!!

You can check your thermostat the following way:

-inspect it if it's not damaged
-inspect if no small parts are present that may block thermostat from opening
-put it into the water
-start heating the water and when water becomes warmer the thermostat should OPEN

Some people prefer to flush the system as well... check if your coolant reservoir has no cracks! A common problem with S Types...

I had the same issue with my S type 4L 2000 model.
The fan was running although the temperature was not hot.
Moreover, I had a message saying the engine was getting hot when the temperature was normal.
I had the thermostat changed (OJAAJ86484+ NCA2246BA).
To get it, need to unfill the water tank.

Global cost 420 euros 5INCLUDING 19.60 % VAT.
Thermostat itself cost 54 euros

If this can help ...
