My 2002 S Type (48,000 miles) check engine light has come on again.  It happened a few weeks ago and turned off after a few days (actually it turned off when I was on my way to the auto shop to fix it).  Now a few weeks later that same light came back on. Both times it turned on it was really hot outside. I did take it to one shop and the code was 1383 but said it was a Jaguar Manufacturer code and I would have to take it to the dealer. The dealer here in town is awful so I am taking it to a foreign car specialist. Anyone encountered this same type of problem or know what that code means? I do have an extended warranty. It's been in the shop quite a bit, new shifter, 2 new window lifters, oxygen sensor....

I assume you have 4 liter engine, correct?
That error number is because of the variable cam timing problem, probably.
I would suggest you go to an experienced mechanic to check it....otherwise if breaks you are in a big trouble...

Did you hear a different engine sound lately ?

This is a recognised "fault" and can be eliminated by a new download of software by the dealer. My 2001 V6 car has thrown this code 3 times in 3 years but I am happy that I know there is nothing amiss. It is saying that a bank of variable valve timing, 1383 or 1388 (Bank 1 or Bank 2) is over retarded. There is or was a TSB - S303-09 for cars of VIN L00001 to M44997, 1999 to 2001. If you are in the USA you tend to add a year on so it may cover your car. It has to be done by someone with the correct Jaguar software.
Hope this helps, It's nothing to worry about but if the warranty company will pay for the TSB work why not complain and see what they say.

Just to add that the TSB was only to be done if the customer complained.

I went to a Foreign auto place a few days ago and they said the exact same thing. I am having problems with the local Jaguar dealer (they told me I needed a $7000 transmission and had to be retowed for a diagnosis of the failure, they transmission shop said it the transmission was perfect and I had a shifter that needed adjusting)-- the Jag dealer said oh oops... we have a new mechanic and he thought it looked bad.... So now I live in Spokane and have to drive to Seattle to get this fixed! (300 miles away)

Oh well it will be a nice drive, maybe make a "long weekend" trip out of it. I am sure there will be somebody closer though if you contact a local Jaguar owners group to save the hassle of making the trip.
300 miles! That's just about 50 miles short of the distance by road from top to bottom of the Scottish mainland.

Good luck!

Do you have an error number for the transmission problem? Erratic shifting?

7k is still too high.... you can get a re manufactured for around 1.5k USD. The fitting should be fast and around $500 or so max... The core charge/shipping? Depends where you are located

My transmission is fine-- the Jaguar Dealer misdiagnosed it.

Always double check with at least two independent repair shops.

I am glad your transmission is fine. Next time you should start worrying when tranny is going to be dead, if you experience:

-erratic shifting
-long delays engaging (when engine is cold, about 5+seconds)
-loud sound
-torque converter strange sound when engaged in Drive, you can hear it with the door open (the best)

then it should be checked for
-fluid level
-metallic parts present (there is a magnet on the oil pan)

Keep in mind that tranny must be serviced, don't believe the hype - filled for life
-filter change
-fluid flush (mercon v)

If it's missing any gears or have problems with shifting, the most inexpensive replacements/ checks must be performed:

- 4-3 pre-stroke spring
- solenoids
