I have a 1998 Vandenplas.  Recently, the warning light began to come on after 5 minutes or so of driving, with the message "Fail Safe Mode."  I took the car to my mechanic, who ran a test with his diagnostic computer.  It showed no "hard codes," so he did not know what causes the warning light.  The car seems to run normally in this mode.  The only problem is that cruise control does not work.  I am taking a long trip in a few days and would like to have cruise.

Has anyone else had this problem?  Any ideas on how to fix it?

I am not familiar with the 1998, my Jags are older, obviously your mechanic isn't either.

Have you checked the Owner's Manual to see if there's anything in it about diagnostic messages and any relation to the Speed Control?

have you checked the database at Jag-lovers.org to see if someone else has had the same symptom?

I have heard that if you disconnect the positive cable at the battery for 10 minutes or so, all codes will be erased from the memory, and any REAL codes will come back after you reconnect the cable. just a thought.

But be careful about crossing the battery cables, some people have connected them back reversed only to ruin their cars!!
