Just started yesterday and I wnet into a panic after reading what I found on more general websites about this. However, it did not come on during today's commutes at all. Is it OK to continue driving?

Probably OK, but would be nice if you can read the computer error codes.....and see where is the problem.

The closest dealer is 3 1/2 hour drive away and I'm afraid to to that. Is it possible that someone local can read the codes (ie worth calling around?) or is it always a dealer?

Not all OBD2 compliant readers can read Jaguar specific codes. You may want to call them and see if they will be able to read the code(s). Reading standard OBD2 codes will not help, you need manufacturer (Jaguar) specific codes.
I have used autoray and some cheap code-readers before - never forget for manufacturer specific codes. However, nowadays there are some OK priced alternatives like Gendan and quite possible some others as well that fully support Jaguar interface.
