I had the engine sputter problem all the time.
Sputter at idle and then engine jerking 4th and 5th gear......at some times - usually when accelerating.

I did the following, first time and myself, took me about 6 hours:

Removed intake manifold and replaced the following:

-installed new valve cover gaskets (didnt replace inner gaskets, but used silicone gasket sealant a bit)

-installed new spark plugs (used NGK iridium. Denso Iridium is also a good choice Smiley)

-installed new intake manifold gaskets

-installed 4 new ignition coils (need 6, but driver side coils can be easily changed later)

I did some tests and it turned out that one or two ignition coils was the problem.  I strongly suggest changing 3 ignition coils on passenger side (to access these coils/spark plugs you need to remove intake manifold) and then you can play around with driver side ignition coils.
I would also suggest changing spark plugs as they are not that expensive nowadays - use Denso or NGK Iridium Smiley

Hint: 3.0L has the problem when oil goes into the coil shafts - bad inner valve gaskets (you need 2 for V6) so it's always good to replace these gaskets as well (if you see any oil signs in coil shafts).

Hint: Make sure you do not damage the Hose Upper Rad plastic pipe that feeds back the coolant reservoir. It tends to brake quite easily.

And there you go. No more engine sputter. I get more miles per gallon and I am damn happy!

If you have any questions or comments, please post here.

I also need to replace the # 1 & 3 coils on mine. MSD make coils for Ford, Iam wondering if they will work. The coils on the Jag are stock Ford coils for the 3.0 Ford engine. I also heard that Ford has updated the coils and booths.

There are multiple OEM replacement parts for this ignition coil, and I am sure you can find more suppliers...

Airtex 5C1197
Motorcraft DG517
ACDelco F569
Evistion also has one

You will need to take off the intake manifold to replace coils #1 & #3. I suggest you also replace upper (2x) and lower  intake manifold gaskets (2x), lower breather elbow, valve cover gaskets (x2), spark plug boss seal gaskets (x2). Spark plug change also is a good choice when intake manifold is off... You can go for iridium spark plugs..model: TR55IX from NGK. You will need 6 spark plugs.

I all ready have my 3 coils and 1 valve cover gasket. Just got them from auto zone. Wells coils 59.00 each. Gasket 25.00. I didnt know the intake needed to come off. I thought only the plunem only needed to be removed like on the lincoln ls 3.0.

..you should also replace lower breather hose. this is a common failure for Jaguars 1999-2002 V6 3L S-Types..

You need two valve cover gaskets. However, from my own experience, I am replacing valve cover gaskets every second time. I suggest you replace inner valve cover seals - aka spark plug seals. This is also a common failure and if not changed, the oil can hit spark plugs and then you have problems.
Definitely check the lower breather elbow hose - you will need to remove (not fully) injector holder (3 screws I guess) to access it. We will have a full manual with photos how to do it shortly.

You can find some part numbers (seals, lower breather elbow..etc) at our web site:
